Nasal Decolonization

PDI is excited to participate in the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Hot Topic Virtual Forum on Nasal Decolonization. Join PDI Clinical Science Liaisons Deva Rea, MPH, BSN, RN, CIC, and Marc-Oliver Wright, MT (ASCP), MS, CIC, FAPIC for an informative webinar on “Nasal Decolonization: Who Nose the New Guidelines Best?” on Tuesday, June 8 or Thursday, June 17 to learn more about nasal decolonization recommendations in the new Preoperative Patient Skin Antisepsis Guideline.

Surgical site infections (SSI) remain the most common healthcare-associated infection (HAI) in the United States, representing a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is often the cause of SSI arising from bacteria colonizing the patient’s anterior nares. Decolonization of the anterior nares provides an important strategy in the prevention of SSI. Protocols for nasal decolonization prior to surgical procedures vary by institution, and the newly updated AORN guideline for Preoperative Skin Antisepsis will assist healthcare professionals with navigating risk-based decisions for developing preoperative decolonization programs at their facilities.

Objectives:

After completing this continuing education activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Review the significance of nasal decolonization in surgical site infection (SSI) prevention.
  2. Discuss recommended decolonization protocols utilized in SSI prevention programs.
  3. Outline strategies for implementing preoperative nasal PVP-I decolonization protocols in healthcare facilities.
